New Moon Intention-Setting Ritual: How to Reset with Candlelight | Ara Candles

There is a moment each month when the sky goes fully dark and the moon disappears from view entirely. That’s the new moon, and this one arrives on July 14th in the sign of Cancer the sign most tied to home, emotional security, and the people we love.

Cancer new moons ask something different of us than a typical fresh start. Rather than pushing forward, they ask us to soften. To sit with how we want to feel, instead of what we want to achieve. It’s a lunation for nurturing relationships, tending to emotional wealth, and building a sense of safety, both in our homes and within ourselves.

The themes worth sitting with this cycle: emotional wealth over material wealth, growth that looks like rest instead of hustle, and a renewed attention to the relationships and spaces that make you feel most like yourself.

Below is a simple ritual to mark it, using candlelight as the anchor.

Begin with the ordinary

Before any ritual, tend to the ordinary first. Clear the surfaces. Put away what’s been sitting out. Wipe down the space you’ll be sitting in. There’s nothing symbolic about this part yet — it’s simply care, and Cancer season responds well to this kind of quiet tending, the same way you’d tidy a home before guests arrive. In this case, you’re the guest.

Once the physical clutter is gone, you can go a layer deeper if you’d like. Passing a bundle of sage or palo santo through the room, letting the smoke reach the corners where stagnant energy tends to collect, is one way to do it. If smoke isn’t part of your practice, opening a window for a few minutes works just as well, or simply lighting your candle in the space — either way, the air changes.

Light the candle

With the space cleared, light your candle slowly, and take three long breaths as the flame catches. This is the moment you shift from doing into being. If it feels right, set up a small altar nearby — the candle, a photo, a few flowers, a folded piece of paper for your intentions. Nothing elaborate. It simply gives the intention somewhere to rest.

Sitting near the candlelight, close your eyes and bring your attention to your chest. Cancer energy lives here, in the heart and the ribcage, in the quiet ache of feeling. Ask yourself gently where you feel most at home right now, and where you don’t. You don’t need to solve anything. Just notice what comes up.

Write it down

When you’re ready, open your journal and write freely. If it helps to start with a question, try one of these: What does emotional security actually feel like to me? Which relationship in my life deserves more presence this cycle? What’s one small habit that would help me feel more at home in my own life?

Write your intentions as if they’re already true, in the present tense, in plain language. If you’ve set up an altar, place the folded paper there. Let the candle stay lit while you write.

If crystals are part of your practice

This is the moment to hold one, or set it on your altar, while you sit with your intentions. A few pair naturally with this particular new moon: moonstone for new beginnings and quiet intuition, rose quartz for self-love and softening anxiety, white howlite for patience and emotional clarity, selenite for a clear mind in meditation, opal for balance through change, and black tourmaline for grounding, if the emotions this new moon stirs up feel like a lot to hold. You don’t need all six — let one or two feel right, and set your intention while it’s in hand.

Close in stillness

When you’re finished, sit for one more minute in silence before blowing out the candle. This closing pause matters as much as anything before it. It’s the moment the intention settles in.

If you’d like to extend the evening, a warm bath with sea salt or a meal made slowly, with real attention, are both quiet ways to carry this same nurturing energy forward.

There’s nothing complicated about any of this, and that’s really the point. A ritual doesn’t need to be elaborate to work. It needs to be consistent, sensory, and honest. Lighting a candle gives your nervous system a clear signal that this is a moment set apart.

Decluttering, journaling, and sitting in stillness afterward give the intention somewhere to land.
